Virtual Space Emerges from the Real World, CCP and IBM
Control versus Chaos.
Freedom versus Tyranny.
Evolution versus Revolution.

Such are the battles being waged by EVE Online's over 330,000 capsuleers that inhabit the vast virtual universe of New Eden. Analogous battles are waged every day in the real world as part of the development process at CCP Games, the visionary developers of EVE Online.

A game - in the end - requires boundaries and rules in order to ensure competition. Video games are not immune to this reality - for competition to exist, rules that set the playing field must also, by definition, exist. And yet, in New Eden, the rules of the game serve as a mere framework: a murky plot setting up a four way, interstellar war; a massive player-run economic system offering opportunities galore, and a single world game space where allies can become enemies in pursuit of the almighty ISK (the in-game currency). Within this framework emerges a complicated, tangled tale of greed, power, altruism and basic humanity set thousands of years in the future and totally driven by you - a character in the ever-expanding, constantly fluctuating world of EVE Online.

The experience of EVE Online is truly ”emergent” - both for the player and the game developer. Long held "truths" about the world of EVE Online change daily, based largely upon player interaction, making the game masters at CCP more “stewards” of a virtual environment rather than traditional, content developers. Such is life at the bleeding edge of massive online role playing game development where the war to answer the player's call for more immersive, more persistent, and more compelling content means a never ending "to-do" list that constantly stretches the definition of an MMORPG and the capabilities of its developers. EVE Online delivers by allowing players the ability to pick up the shovel and pail and join it’s developer in the sandbox.

Through a partnership with IBM, CCP has answered one such call in the form of EVE Gate - a social networking platform and web interface for the pilots of EVE Online. It enables many previously-in-game-only functions to be handled through any web browser, expanding user access to the game by opening up in-game mail, friend updates and a calendar for planning with Corporations and Alliances. In EVE, the metagame thrives as an important part of the playing experience. Whether that is coordinating hundreds of players in a fleet fight, brokering a deal for an expensive ship or deciding which Alliance your small corporation will join, the personal relationships between pilots in EVE are what holds it together. EVE Gate catalyzes those relationships through a common medium beyond the traditional interface. It explores new, exciting technologies in order to serve the player demands and continue the evolution of New Eden.

IBM, CCP and the GGDA would like to invite you to attend a panel discussion on Tuesday, August 10th, at the Klaus Advanced Computing Building on the Georgia Tech Campus where we will cover the following subjects: - EVE Gate: What is it and why is it crucial to truly, emergent gameplay. - EVE Gate as a model project for the continued expansion of New Eden (as a game universe) and CCP (as a game developer) - The IBM/CCP partnership (8 years old and still going strong) - The technology behind EVE Gate - Caching Appliances - What is a Caching Appliance? - What does it do? - Why do I care? - Platform Bound? - Why the best game developers aren't limiting themselves to a single system of play and why you should too . . . . - What's next for EVE Online, DUST 514, and other projects from the folks at CCP.

We invite you to come early and stay after for an open bar, cocktail food, and networking opportunities. Representatives from CCP and IBM will be on hand to answer any questions you might have about the details discussed in the session. We look forward to seeing you there.

GGDA Silverlight/XNA Game Competition
GGDA Silverlight/XNA Game Competition

The GGDA is pleased to present its 3rd annual Game Developer Competition. Submit a game to be reviewed and judged by your fellow GGDA members. Compete for an Xbox 360 and gain recognition in the Georgia developer community.

Who can enter the competition? Anyone who is a member of the GGDA, including students. Even if you don't really live in Georgia, you're welcome to compete.

What is the goal? The basic guideline for the game is simple. Since the winner will be selected just before St. Patrick's day, create a game involving a Leprechaun. It could be the player, an enemy or any character in the game, so long as it is actually in the game.

What can I use to make the game? This year, the competition will explore the Microsoft interactive technologies of Silverlight and XNA. These development tools invite a broad range of programming and design skillsets, centering around the .NET environment.

When is the game due? There are two steps in the submission process.
1. Registration: To have your game considered for the competition, you must submit a screenshot, even if it's a rough draft, of your game by January 31st. Submit the screen shot via email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
2. Judging: Bring your finalized game to the monthly GGDA meeting on March 16th. Attendees will play the submissions and vote. Bring a laptop to display your game or send the link and or install directions to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The winner walks away with a 360.

What was that about an Xbox 360? The first prize this year will be an Xbox 360, graciously donated by Microsoft, whom the GGDA wishes to thank for their continued support of the Georgia game development community. The first runner up will receive a prize from the GGDA itself. All submitted games will be made available to the public.

Who will be judging my game? Any GGDA member who shows up for the March 16th meeting will be eligible to play and vote on submissions. Aside from the grand prizes, remember you're also earning recognition from newcomers to game development as well as local industry professionals.

Submissions may also be made to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it so long as they are made at least 24 hours before each deadline. Any further inquiries about the contest may also be directed to Deborah.

I.D. Magazine - Annual Design Review 2010

I.D. is proud to announce the expansion of its Annual Design Review in 2010 with two new categories including Gaming.

Too often overlooked as part of the Interactive category, Gaming needs its own section to reflect the explosion of digital gaming products and platforms, which has become a growing part of daily life for everyone, not just gaming enthusiasts. We'll consider console games, computer games, web-based games, and mobile games (including iPhone apps), as well as consoles, controllers, and other systems. Note: traditional play-oriented consumer products, such as sports gear and board games, should still be submitted to the Consumer Products category. If you have already submitted a Gaming entry to the Interactive category, you do not need to resubmit. Your entry will be recategorized.

Here is the complete list of categories in this year's Annual Design Review:

* Consumer Products
* Graphics
* Packaging
* Furniture
* Environments
* Equipment
* Interactive
* Transportation (New Category)
* Gaming (New Category)
* Concepts
* Student Work (Formerly the Student Design Review)

Since 1954, the Annual Design Review has recognized the best in product, furniture, graphic, and environment design, from the iconic to the obscure. Throughout the years, this annual showcase has chronicled the evolution of design, and highlighted its impact on our material and visual culture. Each year, the featured work is chosen by a jury of leading practitioners, who, along with I.D.'s editorial team, focus the abundance of submissions into a clear survey of the state of design. The resulting overview is published in the July/August issue of I.D. magazine — the Annual Design Review issue.

Work must have been created between January 1, 2009 and December 1, 2009. Student work must be the result of a classroom/academic assignment completed during the 2008/2009 academic year. Students must include a copy of an official student I.D. from that year. The student Best of Category winner will receive the RADO YOUNG TALENT DESIGN AWARD, a $10,000 prize.

For full details on all the categories and to submit, please visit www.id-mag.com/2010ADR/

Call for Information about Game Engines
GDDA-member Robert Becker is preparing a short white paper for the Instructional Technology Forum in November. ITF is a listserve hosted by the University of Georgia with about 4000 subscribers worldwide.

The white paper is about using game engines to develop instructional systems. Becker will advocate optimizing e-learning by harnessing some of the powers of commercial game engines.

Trouble is, he's not an expert on game engines.

If you are an expert and willing to share some of your knowledge in this white paper, Becker would like to hear from you. The white paper is pro bono, but your contribution will be fully acknowledged in the paper.

GGDA and IGDA - What's the Difference?
It's a common question, "what is the difference between GGDA and IGDA?" Another common question is, "when or why should I join either of them?" Although they share similar names and members of one are oftenmembers of the other, the two associations are entirely separate in their missions, objectives, and financial resources.

Here is some information and advice to help guide your decision to join...
NAMEGeorgia Game Developers Association, Inc. (www.GGDA.org)International Game Developers Association, Inc. (www.IGDA.org)
FOCUS Growing the size and quality of the game industry in Georgia. Helping our Georgia professionals and businesses achieve success and earn recognition from the International community. Always at the international level and with no favoritism to any country...building a global community of professionals and setting international standards and best practices.
JOIN AND VOLUNTEERIf you work or plan to work in the Southeastern US within the next 5-10 years.If you plan to work outside of Georgia or the Southeast and/or you want to contribute to the growth and maturity of our industry at the international level.
CHAPTERSBoth GGDA and IGDA have chapters. Sometimes, they are led by the same person and meet on the same night as a co-branded event. Sometimes, they are totally separate events under separate management.
LAST WORDAs long as you can remember that "G" is for Georgia and "I" is for International, you should have no trouble applying your time and resources as a member or volunteer in the way that you want to contribute most to the growth of our game industry. The ideal case is that you'll join and support both organizations.

A few years back, the paid membership of GGDA was roughly 5% the size of the paid membership of IGDA and that included cross-overs who were members of both organizations. Let's all set a goal for Georgia professionals to represent 10% of IGDA's paid membership by 2012. But, let's also assure that our "home team" receives the at least that same level of dedication.

Georgia Fall Game Jam

Georgia Fall Game Jam

at SPSU - Sept 18-20 (Fri-Sun)

Sponsored By:
Chick-Fil-A

What is a Game Jam?

A game jam is 48 hours of fun, creativity, and chaos! People self-form into teams and develop a game from scratch in 48 hours. Artists and programmers collaborate together, share ideas, and have a great time. We'll start at 5:00PM Friday, Sept. 18, 2009 and go through 5:00PM Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009.

How Does it Work?

Everyone meets on Friday, Sept 18, 2009 in J-201L at SPSU. The organizers will then share the constraints and rules for the game jam. Everyone will have 15 minutes to come up with a pitch and then share it with the group. Teams will then be formed; no one leaves until everyone is a part of a team. Teams are free to use the space during the 48 hours (you can sleep and come and go as you'd like). Each team will have until 4:00PM on Sunday, September 20th to create their game.

Who Can Participate?

Anyone 18 years and older can participate in a game jam: experienced professionals, students, and wannabes. Artists, programmers, and generally creative people are needed. Teams will be formed on site.

Register!

Visit http://games.spsu.edu/gamejam for details and directions. To register, send your name and other contact info to Jon Preston ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Hi-Rez Studios to Unveil Global Agenda® at E3

Highly Anticipated Spy-Fi Action MMO Available on Expo Floor for Hands-On Preview

ATLANTA, Georgia – May 19, 2009  Hi-Rez Studios, an independent developer of online interactive entertainment, confirmed that they will showcase their massively multiplayer online game Global Agenda at the Electronic Entertainment Expo next month in Los Angeles, California.  Global Agenda, built on Unreal® Engine 3, delivers fast-paced combat set in Earth’s near future, a spy-fi world of advanced technology and player-driven conflict.

Global Agenda is currently in closed alpha testing.  The hybrid MMO combines shooter-oriented action combat, RPG style character progression, and competition between player-created groups to capture and control territory like a grand strategy game.

"Global Agenda is very different than the typical MMO”, said Todd Harris, Executive Producer.  “The intense mission combat and team-based tactics are best experienced rather than merely explained.  We’re excited to bring Global Agenda to the show for hands-on demonstrations, accompanied by one-on-one conversations with members of the game development team.”

The Hi-Rez Studios exhibit will be located in the South Hall, Booth 2630.  Visitors will have chance to play Global Agenda and meet with its developers.

Global Agenda...Ready for Closed Beta...

Global Agenda, a New Massive Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) from Hi-Rez Studios, Ready for Closed Beta with Server and Network Installation from Internap

-- Innovative game architecture combines fast-action character creation and personal interaction on a massive scale, eliminating geographic and server constraints --

ATLANTA – (February 24, 2009)Internap Network Services Corporation (NASDAQ: INAP), a global provider of end-to-end Internet business solutions, announced today its Performance IP network and Managed Server hosting services  are playing an integral part in creating a breakthrough experience in the new massive multiplayer online (MMO) game Global Agenda, from Hi-Rez Studios. Global Agenda is currently in alpha testing with closed beta expected to begin in Q2, 2009.

Global Agenda is an action MMO using Unreal® Engine 3 set on Earth in the 22nd century. In the wake of a severe global disaster, player created factions, covert agencies and teams of elite special operatives, scheme against each other for power while simultaneously opposing a totalitarian world government bent on domination.

The Global Agenda unique style of gameplay combines the fast-paced action of a multi-player shooter, the character progression of an MMO and the player-driven territorial conflict of a strategy game.   The game’s unique server architecture and “on-demand instancing” allows all players and agencies to compete within the same meta-game without being divided by computer servers -- as is traditional in the MMO industry. For that reason, Hi-Rez Studios will be using Internap data centers services for Global Agenda in both North America and Europe.

“Given our game’s fast pace and huge scale, we needed a solution that offers the lowest network latency possible, while giving us great flexibility in managing spikes in demand,” said Stewart Chisam, vice president of game operations at Hi-Rez Studios. “The combination of Performance IP and Managed Server from Internap solves that problem for us and offers a scalable, secure and reliable technology platform to support the players of Global Agenda. Just a few years ago, network and server overhead precluded the development of this type of game. That has all changed. Global Agenda is a breakthrough game from both a technology perspective and a gameplay perspective, and we are very excited to bring it to market using Internap’s infrastructure services.”

Internap offers a unique, bundled solution of Performance IP networking, managed server and data center colocation that provides game developers a low latency networked infrastructure that is well suited for online games, particularly massive multiplayer online games (MMOGs). The solution is based on patented network optimization technology called MIRO (Managed Internet Route Optimizer) and a data center and server platform that extends to 44 locations globally.  Internap’s network services carry a 100 percent performance SLA (service level agreement) designed to support business critical websites and multi-media Internet applications.

“Since Internap was founded in 1996, it has always been a trusted supplier to the software and online gaming developer communities,” said Tim Sullivan, chief technology officer at Internap. “As software has begun to embrace a software-as-a-service delivery model and online gaming has created the massive multiplayer context, Internap’s low latency network services with integrated servers, storage, and data centers become even more relevant to these IT innovators.”

According to the Pew Internet & American Life project[1], more than one-half of US adults play video games, and about one in five play every day or almost every day. Age is closely related to gaming: More than four out of five US adults ages 18 to 29 said they were video gamers, while only 23 percent of respondents 65 and older said the same. Pew said men were slightly more likely than women to game, and urbanites were more likely to game than those in rural areas.
