Contract Basics for Indie Game Devs

All Chapters

The GGDA has seen far too many indie devs stumble when it comes to the legal side of the industry. Reviewing contracts, understanding intellectual property law, or starting your own business can be intimidating for even the most seasoned video game developer. In this talk, video game and entertainment attorney Andrew Thomas will explain the legal concepts every video game developer should know, such as spotting red flags in a contract, the basics of intellectual property law, and forming an LLC. Understanding your legal rights will help you maximize your IP while minimizing your risk of engaging in costly legal disputes.

Andrew Thomas is an associate attorney at Premack Rogers Downs who advises film productions, video game developers, and content creators on a variety of legal issues. Before becoming a lawyer, Andrew attended NYU for acting, then worked for four years on a variety of film and television sets in New York City, including Martin Scorsese’s “Vinyl.” Andrew also produced the short film “Spiders,” a 2016 Festival de Cannes selected short film.
