Third Georgia Esports League Season Announced
Almost $20,000 in scholarships already awarded

September 4, 2018ATLANTA – The Georgia Esports League (GEL) announced its third season today for colleges across the state. The season culminates in a state championship Oct. 20 at Georgia State University’s new esports facility in its Atlanta Sports Arena.GEL, run by the Georgia Game Developers Association (GGDA), has already given away almost $20,000 in scholarships to students who competed in its first two seasons. These have attracted teams from the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, SCAD-Atlanta, Wiregrass Technical College, and more. To register a college team for the Fall 2018 season, schools should email info@ggda.org.
“Video games are turning into the most popular sports of the 21st century,” said Andrew Greenberg, interim commissioner of the Georgia Esports League and executive director of the Georgia Game Developers Association. “Schools know that the desire to make games is what drives many students to want to learn about technology in the first place. An esports team helps them attract even more good students.”GEL combines its tournaments with career fairs to match esports talent with employers. Its first career fair, coinciding with its Spring Championship at Momocon, attracted numerous companies and more than 500 job seekers. This Fall GEL’s career fair is Oct. 7, happening in tandem with an esports team formation event at the Southern Interactive Entertainment and Game Expo (www.siegecon.net).

“Esports players are the perfect new hires,” said Greenberg. “Technologically advanced, team oriented, focused and passionate, they have exactly the skills employers are seeking.”

Championship competitors will play popular Georgia-based esports video games with titles such as Hi-Rez Studio’s “Smite” and Blue Mammoth’s “Brawlhalla.”  The GGDA has also awarded $1,500 in scholarships to student shoutcasters – the announcers who livestream esports events.
