GamesThatWork Wins Learning Game Prize

Toothbrushing Training in Mixed and Virtual Reality

Children learn from games. Each year, the US Education Department (ED) brings America’s best learning games to Washington at the ED Games Expo. This year, hosted by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), more than fifty top studios demonstrated over eighty learning games. Most of these games have already won support from federal agencies.

First prize among these went to Brush Up, the toothbrush training game. Brush Up was created by GamesThatWork with early support from the National Institutes for Health. Expo attendees played Brush Up’s new room-scale virtual reality version as well as the commercially released mobile game that features a unique mixed reality model.

ED Games Prize winners are selected by school age children that actually play the Expo games. This player perspective complements the assessments made of Brush Up by learning scientists and public health professionals. These include a 2015 Innovation prize awarded to the Brush Up mixed reality mobile game at the prestigious Institute of Medicine.

GamesThatWork is an Atlanta studio that pioneers mixed reality methods and game-based learning to improve human performance at all levels from children’s manual skills to senior cognitive analysis. The studio serves corporate, military and non-profit clients as well as educational institutions. GamesThatWork, founded in 1996, is a member of both ATDC and GGDA.

Brush Up VR will be available soon on Viveport and Steam. The mixed reality Brush Up mobile game is available now on iTunes App Store and Google Play Store and can be seen at BrushUpGame.com.
